Yesterday afternoon, BJP group leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Manoj Kotak said, “The inauguration by Congress was totally a political stunt and it was illegal. The beautification work will be done with BMC’s money. How are they claiming it is their project?”

Opposition leader in BMC, Devendra Amberkar said, “Our local corporator and former MLA have been following this project for a long time. The proposal of beautification was first put forth in 2010 but was delayed due to several reasons.

Just because the Shiv Sena-BJP combine is in power in the state, now they want to take credit for this project.” After Congress’ inauguration a furious Standing Committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse had slammed the opposition saying the Congress is confused after election. “They have done this for credit and publicity.

Sena has included this project in their election manifesto,” he said. Mayor Snehal Ambekar, Bandra MLA Ashish Shelar and Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam will inaugurate the project today.

The project
Beautification of the 7.5-acre Bandra talao will be done at a cost of Rs 5 crore in one-and-a-half years. The proposed plan includes cleaning silt from the talao, having boating facilities, a fountain and laser lights, an amphitheatre, a walkway along the lake and construction of surrounding wall.

However, some time back the heritage committee suggested some changes in the proposal regarding the walkway and amphitheatre which was reported by this paper (‘Bandra talao beautification bumps into heritage hurdle’, November 5). BMC has included the changes suggested and agreed to give NOC.
