Mumbai: Motormen of Central Railway embrace virtual reality training

Motormen on Central Railway in Mumbai are now undergoing virtual reality training to enhance their skills in locomotive and EMU local train operation. The initiative aims to provide hands-on practical training, moving beyond traditional classroom-based instruction.

According to a spokesperson from Central Railway, “With the rapid advancements in technology, there arose a compelling need to integrate these state-of-the-art tools into the railway system to yield superior results.” The virtual reality system is currently installed at the CSMT Suburban Motormen lobby and will soon be extended to other suburban crew lobbies across the Mumbai Division.

The Virtual Reality-Based Troubleshooting training module, with a duration of 2-3 days, will be an additional aspect to regular training for motormen. The cost of each instrument is Rs 6.5 lakh.

Describing the development process, the spokesperson said, “The first stage involves creating a 3-D model of an EMU cab on the Meta platform, enabling real-time cab simulation. A storyboard is then meticulously prepared for troubleshooting operations, outlining each step involved. This storyboard is brought to life in a virtual environment, providing crew members with a real-time sensation, as if they are physically present in the cab, while they learn and practice various operations.”

The Virtual Reality-Based Troubleshooting Module offers three distinct modes: Learn, Try, and Assess. A comprehensive tutorial has been developed to guide users in understanding the fundamentals of using the headset and joystick.

The innovative training approach enhances the effectiveness of crew training, promoting safety and operational excellence within the railway system. It equips railway staff with the knowledge and practical skills needed to troubleshoot and maintain locomotives and EMUs, contributing to a safer and more efficient railway network.

The introduction of this cutting-edge technology signifies a significant milestone in the modernization of Indian Railways, aligning with global trends in using virtual reality and artificial intelligence for enhanced training practices.
