The last time we heard Ashutosh Phatak at his club, we were reeling with boredom as a result of a Floyd overdose. And since we're suckers for tags like 'World's Best' and 'new avatar' we showed up at the Frog to hear the rejigged version of his album Petri Dish. Anoushka Manchanda was on stage when we entered and we realised that Ashu's set veered right off the track -- from the psychedelic rock space to electro dance. While it wasn't a straight club set thanks to drummer Lindsay D'Mello adding boom, Ashu made sure the trills and thrills belonged to the keys.
The big draw -- Shaa'ir+Func's Monica Dogra -- also turned out to be a big surprise. Dogra, currently in New York, featured on two tracks that were pre-recorded and beamed off a projector. It looked really cool but we're sure it wasn't too easy to pull off. Ashu introduced one of the tracks called Wasted as a tribute to The Who. Although it sounded nothing like them, it was great to groove to like the rest of the set and even included a nod to We Didn't Start the Fire in the second half of the track.
Manchanda joined him on stage again for a tentatively titled track named Foot Dub, yet another giddy foot-stomper driven by furious rhythm and keys. Ashu goes solo for the title track with some bizarre verse -- "I'm like a sauna/You're like a fish ufffd/I'm like a foetus/You're like a womb." Thankfully, this one comes towards the end, where you may be too sloshed to pay attention to the lyrics or maybe even find the hook because you're not stone sober.
The frontman ditches the dance grooves for some tiring, psychedelic fantasia on Sunrise. Manchanda and vocalist Suman Sridhar join him on stage. Sridhar is wasted on throaty oohs but a Frog regular with a soft spot for hoodies broke into a crazy, loopy dance that was more entertaining than the Floyd tribute.
