Shibani Kashyap realised that there was scope to entertain viewers with a fresh rendition of her hit 2003 track, Sajna aa bhi ja, after noticing the array of cover versions that her fans would share on her social media timeline.
"The song is still popular. When I perform at concerts, people still want me to render this one, and those across age groups enjoy it. So, I thought it would be nice if I created a remake, and now we are working on not one, but two versions," says the musician, adding that she is in talks with a production house that hopes to include the song in its upcoming movie.
"I don't want to radically deviate from the original, but want to add elements of qawwali music to this version. [I wish to collaborate with] the Indian music group, Nizami Bandhu, with whom I recently did a show in Amritsar. I performed to a qawalli and jazz fusion set, and enjoyed it," she says, adding that there will also be another acoustic version that will be released.
Having witnessed a variety of music trends over her several decade-long career, Kashyap says the current wave that offers listeners the space to enjoy a song's musicality, is an exciting one.
"We had grown accustomed to filling up songs with a lot of elements. But, now a track doesn't need to be that crowded. It must have a signature sound instead, and must essentially have an appealing musicality."
