Navya Nair entered the Malayalam film industry when she was just 15 years old. Acting with stars like Mohanlal, Mamooty, Dilip, Jairam in Malayalam films and Shivarajkumar, Darshan, Vishnuvardhan and Vijay Raghavendra in Kannada films catapulted her into big league. She also won the Kerala state award foru00a0 Nandanam, Saira and Kanne Madanguka. Her next release is the Kannada film Bhagyada Balegara, where she shares screen space with Shivarajkumar.
You were a student when you got your first film offer...I was in class 10 and I had taken part in a youth festival. Someone clicked my pictures and one of those photographs was published on the cover page of the widely read Malayala Manorama. Film offers soon followed.
Were you thrilled to be paired with Dilip in your debut film?
I was signed on for Ishtam and when I learnt that Dilip was the hero, I was thrilled to bits. I still remember the moment as if it was yesterday. I was woken up by a phone call by Girish Vaikom, the assistant director, who told me I would be acting with Dilip. I couldn't go back to sleep after that!u00a0
You have acted in Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam films. How has it been?I enjoy learning new languages. I have learnt to speak Kannada. My Kannada may not be grammatically correct but I am getting there. I have done four Kannada films so far and it's been a great experience. I have been shooting in the villages for Bhagyada Balegara and the affection that people have showered on me is very humbling. I am currently shooting for Dost with Darshan.
Do you play a typical village belle or is there more to your character in the film Bhagyada Balegara?I play Chelluvi, a simple village girl. Shivarajkumar plays the role of Balegara Chennaiah, the bangle-seller. Saying anything more would be giving away the plot. I must tell you that I loved dolling up and wearing dozens of colourful glass bangles for the song sequences.
You earned your degree through a correspondence course and you are now doing your MBA. Are you preparing for an alternative career?(Laughs). I enjoy doing things apart from acting. I am currently writing a series of articles for a Malayalam magazine. I hope to write a book, some day.
