Come August 27 and Govindas will have the spotlight in the streets of Mumbai for the celebration of Dahi Handi. Human pyramids, pots of curd and butter, loud DJs and cultural fervour can be seen commonly during this festival. While Dahi Handi has been central to Janmashtami celebrations since a long time, it has evolved from a cultural phenomenon to a sport.

Govindas reveal that people used to look down upon the game and those who play it, believing them to be ‘jobless’. Now, it has gained glamour due to social media and professional competitions like Pro Govinda League.

Safety has become a focus while playing Dahi Handi now. Govinda pathaks train extensively and aim for a ‘zero injury’ competition and celebration.

Dahi Handi has also become more organised and structured, with some pathaks getting proper facilities like grounds and mats to train. However, this accessibility is limited to some prominent groups and others still struggle to get the required resources for training. (File Pic)
