Jane Austen's famous phrase ' a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife' of the early 19th century seems to have relevance even now, as a new study has found that women in search of a partner are still attracted by wealth and status.

Proving the prognosis of 'Pride and Prejudice' proper, it showed that a lady's expectation-chart marks the post of a high-earning executive or senior manager the most when it comes to the selection of a future mate.

Second in the ranking is the doctor, vet or dentist, while third place is scheduled for the lawyer or solicitor, followed by teachers and the self-employed.

Firemen, who have long had a reputation as being hot stuff, were ranked only 33rd out of 79 professions, reports the Daily Mail.

The study, which was drawn from information provided by female users of match.com, the UK's biggest online dating firm, found the least desirable professions were those of the librarians, florists and lorry drivers.
