The four men accused of gangraping a 17-year-old girl from Mithibai College were produced in court yesterday and have been remanded to five-day police custody

The four men -- Deepak Pandey (20), Sujit Mohite (19), Abhijeet Gaikwad (17) and Mahesh Patil (17) -- accused of gangraping a 17-year-old girl from Mithibai College were produced in court yesterday and have been remanded to five-day police custody.

The matter came to light when the girl from Thakur Village in Kandivli tried committing suicide by consuming sleeping pills after her four tormentors allegedly tried blackmailing her.

According to the Samata Nagar police, the four accused from Thakur Village, all school dropouts, allegedly raped the girl in a room in Thakur Village on January 16.

"The accused warned her against discussing the incident with anybody. On February 26, Mohite, who was her school friend, demanded Rs 2 lakh and threatened to put up her nude photographs on the Internet if she failed to deliver," said a Samta Nagar police officer.

The girl attempted suicide at her home following the blackmail demand. She revealed the whole story after she regained consciousness and her parents asked her for the reason behind her actions.

The parents immediately registered a complaint against the four accused.

Sub-inspector Arvind Shirke of the Samata Nagar police said, "We have arrested all the four accused and they have confessed their crime. They were produced at the Borivli court yesterday and remanded to a five-day police custody."

The police have seized their mobile phones, but there were no nude pictures of the girl in them. They will now check the computers of the four accused.
