Couples who habitually frequent the densely vegetated forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park or the dark cavernous hollows of the Kanheri caves to cosy up, will now have a tough time evading the watchful eyes of cops. The Mumbai police have now initiated a major crackdown on couples getting frisky within the park premises.

The move comes in the wake of the arrest of a 16-year-old boy who allegedly raped his minor classmate repeatedly inside SGNP. To prevent a repeat of such incidents, the cops have decided to fine couples, especially minors, who are caught in compromising positions in dark and conveniently obscure corners of the park. According to cops, the boy and his girlfriend, who are students of the Hemraj School in Borivli, had been romantically involved after they met at a friend's party, and often conducted for clandestine trysts in SGNP and Kanheri caves. The girl eventually conceived.

Learning that they were with child, the two youngsters decided to terminate the pregnancy, and share the expenses incurred to meet that end. Yesterday, the police received a call from authorities at Crystal hospital, where the minor girl had been brought by her mother for the abortion of her 5-month-old foetus. Officers reached the spot and subsequently arrested the 16-year-old boy on charges of rape.

"The couple would meet at the National Park and also rent rooms for their secret trysts," said Rajendra Thakur, senior police inspector of Kasturba Marg police station.

Alarmed by the incident, cops at the Kasturba Marg police station, in whose jurisdiction SGNP falls, have now decided to keep their eyes trained on minor couples who enter the park premises unaccompanied.u00a0 "We will step up patrolling at SGNP, and crack down on couples if we find them in compromising positions in the premises," said an officer from the Kasturba Marg police station.
