The Bombay High Court on Wednesday held as legal the decision of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to build a security wall around the famous Siddhivinayak temple in central Mumbai.
The court order came after residents of the area filed a PIL objecting to the construction on the ground of inconvenience.
Petitioner Vinod Desai and others had contended that because of the wall two roads adjacent to the temple had to be closed. However, the court said MCGM has followed the procedure properly while closing the roads and constructing the wall.
The court said the Commissioner of Police should take a review of threat perception to the temple after a year before considering any proposal to reopen the roads.
The construction of the security wall was based on intelligence inputs which indicated that terrorists might target the temple, which draws a large number of pilgrims from all over the country.
