Patil, a counsellor with Vikas Navnirman Sanstha, an NGO associated with MSACS (Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society), succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

On March 17, Patil was returning home around 12:30 am when he saw three men consuming alcohol on the road at Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli. He asked them to go somewhere else.

However, the trio got angry and then allegedly attacked him with a bamboo stick till he was unconscious. They then stole Rs5,330 and his mobile phone from his bag and fled from the spot.

People from the locality informed Patil's wife Shobhna about the incident who then rushed him to Rajawadi Hospital. Patil had suffered severe injuries on his neck, back, ribs and had fractures on his hands and legs.

Shobhna said, "Before he was attacked, he had told me that he was going to meet some people from another NGO and would return home after that.

"Around 1 am some people came to my place and told me that my husband was lying unconscious on the road."

One of Patil's friends Rahul Shinde, who works with Sanyog Seva Sanstha, an NGO, said "He was a nice man and always helped people. He helped us in carrying out social service activities in Vikhroli and other areas."

Senior inspector Rajendra Shah, Parksite police station, said, "Based on details provided by Patil, we have launched a manhunt to nab the three men who assaulted him."
