Senior citizens (also top right) being vaccinated at Navi Mumbai on Tuesday
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has become the first civic corporation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to give one dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 to 100% of its adult population. As per the state government data, the NMMC had 11.07 lakh population eligible for the vaccination; on October 19, NMMC achieved administering one dose to all these people. About 52.08 per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated - received both doses - till now.
Initially, the NMMC had resolved to vaccinate 8 lakh adults by the end of July 2021, but due to short supply of the vaccines, they managed to achieve this by the end of August. The corporation then emphasised on vaccinating more persons with at least one dose before the third wave.
In September as the supply of vaccines increased, NMMC operated 110 vaccination centres across the city, with few centres giving jabs round the clock. NMMC schools were also converted into centres so that citizens could have the facility near their homes. Though 100% population of the city has been vaccinated, the NMMC is going to continue holding sessions for the first dose of the vaccine, as many citizens living in Thane, Panvel, Raigad and Dombivli travel to Navi Mumbai to get the vaccine.

"In the recent past, we received a good supply of vaccines and it gave the drive a boost. We are happy that the whole population has been covered with one dose, but we have done just half the work. Now we will focus on rapidly giving the second dose to the population," said Dr Ratnaprabha Chavhan, head of the vaccination programme in NMMC.
"This is indeed a milestone, the credit for achieving it goes to each and every health worker on ground. But now we have to focus more on vaccinating people with both doses. And people should not live with a false sense of confidence that as many have been jabbed, the pandemic is over. We have to continue adhering to protocols and COVID appropriate behaviour," said Abhijit Bangar, NMMC commissioner.
As of October 19, 5,76,567 citizens in Navi Mumbai have received both the doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The authorities said as they have received one dose, the drive for administering the second shot would pick up speed.
