Mumbai: All lines at Malad station to shift westward to facilitate new line

In a first-of-its-kind mega rail surgery at Malad, all five Western Railway lines will be shifted westwards starting this weekend to accommodate a new line and boost network capacity. The crucial work also involves creating a new platform at Malad. A ten-hour block will begin at 10 pm on Saturday night. Commuters will be inconvenienced as this will lead to the cancellation of 99 trains, the short termination of 19 trains, and the short origination of 19 trains.

To facilitate the construction of the 6th line between Goregaon and Kandivli, a major block of 10 hours will be taken on the Up and Down slow lines between Goregaon and Kandivli stations from 10 pm to 8 am during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, i.e. August 31/September 1. During this block, all Up and Down slow line trains will run on fast lines between Borivli and Goregaon stations.

Additionally, some Churchgate-Borivli slow services will be short-terminated and reversed from Goregaon station. Passengers should also be aware that Up and Down mail/express trains will be delayed by approximately 10 to 20 minutes during the block period," said Vineet Abhishek, Western Railway's chief public relations Officer.

"The lines will be cut and connected to make way for the new line. One line will be shifted per week to complete the entire block in 35 days, excluding the Ganapati festival days when there is more crowding. The work will be done only on weekends and late at night to minimise the impact on train services," he added.

New Platform plan at Malad

Effective September 1: Due to this infrastructural work, the boarding and deboarding locations at Malad station will change. Existing Platform No. 1, which currently handles Virar/Dahanu-bound local trains on the left side (west) for trains coming from Churchgate, will shift to the right side (east). Passengers will board and deboard from the right side starting September 1.

Effective September 8: Platform No. 2, which currently handles Churchgate-bound slow local trains on the left side (east) for trains coming from Virar, will shift to the right side (west).

Effective September 22: Platform No. 3, which currently handles Virar/Dahanu-bound fast local trains on the left side (west) for trains coming from Churchgate, will shift to the right side (east).

Effective September 29: Platform No. 4, which currently handles Churchgate-bound fast local trains on the left side (east) for trains coming from Virar, will shift to the right side (west).
