Mumbai: August saw most Covid-19 deaths since June

Covid-19 claimed more lives in the city in August than in the preceding two months. Last month, 51 people succumbed to the virus, while the figure stood at 46 and 39 in June and July, respectively. The number of deaths in August is the highest since February when the third wave ended.

After the surge in cases from the third week of May, the number of deaths started increasing but eventually declined by July. But, with the increasing number of cases in the last week of July and August, fatalities again went up. August had less than half the number of cases as June, but more deaths were registered in the former month than the latter.

Though two deaths take place on an average every day, experts said that they are occurring among patients with comorbidities who were diagnosed with Covid-19 during routine tests.

"Most patients reported as Covid-19 fatalities were found positive during routine screenings. These are highly comorbid patients admitted for serious conditions such as strokes and heart attacks. Covid-19 is associated with and not the primary cause of death. These are elderly patients," said Dr Avinash Supe, chief of the state's Covid-19 death audit committee.

Meanwhile, with the relaxation of pandemic restrictions, people are celebrating the festive season in full swing. The roads are packed with crowds and no one seems bothered about the coronavirus.
