Mumbai: BMC's 10 new CBSE schools begin admissions

Admissions have begun for the 10 new CBSE schools to be run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under the Mumbai Public School banner. Parents will be able to apply for seats through the BMC's official online portal or can also visit the schools. Last year the BMC had started one CBSE and one ICSE school and competition for admission was tough with nearly seven applications for a seat.

Schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is one of the ambitious projects of the BMC education department. The objective is to provide quality education to students who cannot afford admissions to private schools in the city. Last year, the BMC opened a CBSE school in Poznan Nagar in Jogeshwari and an ICSE (Indian Certification of Secondary Education) school in Mahim's Woolen Mill. Considering the overwhelming response for this CBSE school last year, the BMC decided to begin 10 more such schools, making it a total of 11 civic-run CBSE schools and one ICSE school across city.

"The admissions process began on Thursday and will continue till March 17. While for the new schools admissions will be done for pre-primary to std VI, for the two schools that began last year, admissions will be only for the kindergarten section. Even as there is an online method of application, help desks have been set up at these schools for parents to approach for admissions. In case the number of applications exceed the number of seats, the BMC will follow the lottery process to finalize them," said an official from the BMC education department. While 90 per cent of seats in the schools will be filled by this process, out of the remaining 10 per cent, five will be reserved for children of BMC officials and five for the Mayor's recommendations. In the recently declared budget, the BMC has allocated Rs 2 crore for these new CBSE schools while it also launched the plan to rebrand civic schools as Mumbai Public Schools.
