Mumbai’s Covid-19 cases, TPR drop for third straight day

Health experts say Mumbai still needs to wait and watch to understand if the trend would continue or figures would rise again

Mumbai witnessed a fall in the test positivity rate (TPR) as well as the number of daily infections for the third consecutive day, on Sunday. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's latest report, the city added 19,474 cases in 24 hours and registered a TPR of 28.53 per cent, down from Saturday's 20,318 and 28.6 per cent, respectively. On Friday, the BMC had confirmed 20,971 cases and recorded a TPR of 29.9 per cent.

Health experts said Mumbai still needs to wait and watch to understand if the trend would continue or figures would rise again. The daily death toll, however, rose on Sunday to seven from five on Saturday. Five of the deceased had comorbidities. While one of the seven patients was in the age group of 40-59 years, the rest were senior citizens.

More than 80 per cent of the patients confirmed to be Covid-positive on Sunday were asymptomatic. The BMC's report showed that there was a marginal dip in hospitalisations as well, at 1,240. The recovery rate in the city continued to fall and was at 85 per cent, with 8,063 patients being discharged on Sunday. The doubling rate declined to 41 days.

The state-wide daily tally rose by 2,954 in 24 hours to 44,388 on Sunday, and the newly confirmed deaths dropped marginally to 12. The state's case fatality rate continued to dip and was at 2.04 per cent. After the discharge of 15,351 patients, Maharashtra had 2,02,259 active cases on Sunday.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) registered a marginal rise in daily infections at 33,299, with the tally including those of Mumbai. The Thane Municipal Corporation reported 2,805 cases, Navi Mumbai 2,759, Panvel 1,415, Vasai-Virar 1,348 and Thane city 1,001. Besides Mumbai, the MMR reported two deaths, one each in Vasai-Virar and Navi Mumbai.

On Friday, 207 new Omicron cases were reported across the state and 40 of them were from Mumbai. The state has a total of 1,216 Omicron cases, and 454 patients have already been discharged.
