Nullah cleaning: 4 per cent done, 2 months to clear 96 per cent silt in Mumbai

Since the second week of March, when the BMC started cleaning drains in preparation for the monsoon, overall 4 per cent of the targeted silt across the city and in Mithi river have been cleared.

At 14 per cent, most work has been done in the Eastern Suburbs, followed by Western Suburbs (5 per cent), Mumbai city (3 per cent) and Mithi river and minor nullahs (1 per cent each), shows the BMC's tracker.

The BMC last year started a dashboard for the public to monitor the progress of nullah cleaning work, at swd.mcgm.gov.in/WMS2023. The dashboard is updated daily, said a civic official.

According to a civic official, 75 per cent of the nullah-cleaning work is done before monsoon, 10 per cent during monsoon and 15 per cent post the rains. The BMC has set aside Rs 226 crore for the task.

Of the Rs 226 crore, Rs 46 crore has been allocated for the cleaning of Mithi river, R90 crore for major nullahs and R90 crore for minor nullahs. There are 309 major drains, 508 small nullahs stretching across 605 km and four rivers with an approximate length of 290 km.
