There are just 264 potholes in Mumbai: BMC

Citizens and Twitter users disagree; sources say civic officials caught up in Covid-19 management and vaccination drive

A Twitter user claimed that there were potholes in Govandi, while another complained about “bad roads” in Kamathipura

Citizens have disbelieved the BMC's pothole reporting system for showing that Mumbai has 264 potholes. The civic body's crate tracking platform says 150 potholes have already been repaired. Sources said the figures are underreported.

According to people, even as BMC's official Twitter account gets complaints about bad roads, bumpy rides and potholes, the system doesn't register those complaints. Though these are early days of monsoon, there are potholes on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Road, Andheri, Chembur and Santacruz east, they said.

If sources are to be revealed, Covid-19 cases and the vaccination drive have left civic officials with hardly any time for other matters. The underreporting is mainly because they are not uploading photos of potholes on the system.

A Twitter user claimed that there were potholes in Govandi, while another complained about "bad roads" in Kamathipura. The BMC has replied saying action will be taken in these cases.

A civic official on request of anonymity said, "We are reporting the potholes on the system. Whenever there is heavy and continuous rainfall, the numbers might shoot up but as there is a dry spell now, potholes are being immediately repaired either by ward staff or by road department officials."
