The BBMP council hall that was renovated for a whopping Rs 2 crore last January, will have to be abandoned for a bigger place.

Work in progress: The civic body did not use the council hall after doing up the interiors, but are now looking at moving to a larger place to accomodate all the corporatorsu00a0 pic/Vinod Kumar T

The hall was done up according to vaastu last year to accommodate 147 instead of 100 corporators. But now the government wants to increase the number to 198. This mean s they need a much bigger hall.

But till they find a new place, the same hall will have to undergo another round of renovation.u00a0

Obviously no one's bothered about the tax payers' money that's being used to do and undo things here.

"We are helpless," said Sreenivasbabu, senior engineer, who was in charge of the last renovation. "We were earlier asked to increase the seating capacity from 100 to 147. Now it's changed, and we have to work on it."

Taxpayers' money

In January the changes were made after seven CMCs, a TMC and over 110 villages were merged with then Bangalore Mahanagar Palike.

A second round of reconstruction which will run into a few more crores, has invited severe criticism.

"The new construction will cost a few crores. From where will they bring it?" asked Mumtaz Begum, former mayor. "This is the mess both state government and officials create out of tax payers' money."

BBMP officials, on the other hand, justified their move.

"We are preparing for the change," said Dr S Khandre, public relations officer. "A decision on the new hall and the place will be taken in meeting today."u00a0
