The national capital will soon play host to country's first and only extreme sports event that was held last month during the Manipur fest. The event attracted international sports stars. The organisers, Extreme Sports Association of Indian (ESAI), have decided to take the concept to metropolitan cities in the country to raise awareness about the sports and attract more youth into its fold.

Extreme sports were first seen on Indian soil during the Manipur tourism festival, an annual event that was held in December. The ESAI will set up a training camp in Delhi in the month of May for 20 days to make Delhiites experience the rush of adrenaline.

The Manipur government has already approved the sports and is also promised to provide space for practicing.

ESAI secretary general Irom Umananda, himself a Mnipur native, informed that he would visit Thailand and Indonesia to formalise mode of holding such training in the country for the first time ever. "Though this sports discipline is very new to our country we have around 15 registered BMX riders and many young riders have shown their enthusiasm in it after witnessing the first rate performance given by the Indonesia and Thailand riders on ramp in the tourism festival," he said.

After getting huge response and international applause for its Manipur event, the ESAI is all set to bring the pulse of the sports to other metros, starting from Delhi. "Extreme sports will attract lot of young enthusiasts. We will be also giving training and setting up a training camp in Delhi for 20 days before the Asian X games. We will be performing stunts on BMX and inline skating. We are also planning to buy standard BMX cycles for the trainees," explained Umanada.

Umanada is expecting a huge response. "This is very popular in the US, European and south Asian countries. Everyone has seen it on television but live experience will be something beyond the tube. After guaging the response in Delhi we will take it to other metro cities. I expect by next year this would become a much bigger event," added Umanada.

Inline skates

Often called Rollerblades after the popular trade name, it is a type of roller skate used for inline skating. Unlike quad skates, which have two front and two rear wheels, inline skates have two, three, four or five wheels arranged in a single line. Some inline skates, especially those for recreation, have a "stop" or "brake" which is used to slow down while skating; most have a heel stop rather than the toe stop, particularly indispensable for inline figure skating.

BMX stands for Bicycle Motorcross and began back in the late 1970s.

The sport has gone through many ups and downs and changes over the years, but today there are five main disciplines.

These disciplines are split into two sections - racing and freestyle.

BMX racing is quite self-explanatory but the freestyle heading has four different disciplines which take a bit of explaining.

STREET
Riding street is just what the name suggests - finding an everyday urban obstacle and doing tricks on/over it.

Street (and ramp) bikes used to be ridiculously heavy.

When people started to ride freestyle, they used race bikes which would fall apart as soon as they looked at a ramp.

FLATLAND
Flatland involves doing tricks on your bike while on a flat piece of ground.
And it's even easier than street for finding places to ride.

Riding flat takes a lot of practise and flatlanders tend to be a funny little crowd.

DIRT JUMPING
Dirt jumping is split into two different forms: 'trail riding' and 'dirt jumping'.
'Trails' is used to describe a collection of dirt jumps.

Trail riders generally prefer to spend their time in the woods, building more and more jumps that link all over the place for them to flow through.

'Dirt Jumping' is basically what you see at the X-Games where there are two or more huge jumps and riders try and do as many tricks over them as possible.

RAMP AND PARK
This involves riding and doing tricks around a specially-designed ramp park.

Ramp parks can be made of concrete (nice), wood (nice) or aluminium (dangerous).

When you first go to a park, don't just drop in and hog the park. Take your turn and let other people ride/skate.
