The current volatile situation in Andhra Pradesh over demands for a separate Telangana state is likely to affect the power situation in Maharashtra's urban areas. The state's production of electricity has been severely affected because of the irregular supply of coal from the various fields in Telangana.
To add to this, some technical problems at the power plant in Koradi has lead to a shortage of 2,500 MW of electricity in the state. To mitigate this shortage, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) will carry out load shedding in the entire state.
However urban areas like Pune are not affected, but if the situation worsens the city may have to face three or four hours of load shedding. Currently the city receives continuous electric supply and to maintain this, the officials are paying twice the nominal amount and purchasing 300 to 400 MW of electricity from private players. An official requesting anonymity, said, "As of now the situation is not that grim but signs indicate that it may go out of hand. "
