Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubr-ahmanyam has, by this point, done it all. Born in 1946, he has enthralled vast numbers of aficionados with his distinctive voice. Why shouldn't he turn his attention to infants, then?

The album Chants for Children is, for those not very quick on the uptake, an album of chants for children. The collection claims to include the most essential Hindu mantras that have to be recited on a daily basis. It is marketed as the perfect guide for every child who needs a lesson in the basic mantras that govern our daily living.

The result is soothing. There are a number of hummable melodies, including shlokas dedicated to Lords Ganesha, Krishna, Shiva, Surya, Hanuman and Vishnu. SP Balasubrahmanyam takes his role very seriously, too, following the guru-shishya tradition that compels him to sing a line first, and then wait for the young ones to chant after him, and it's hard not to be a little moved. An interesting buy for any mother-to-be.
