A hundred and fifty meter cargo vessel, MV Wisdom, which was being towed to Alang in Gujarat, broke away from the tug are ran aground, towards the northern end of Taj Lands End BandraAccording to SK Singh of the Indian Coast Guard, Western Command in Worli, the vessel broke loose due to choppy seas and rough weather at around 2 pm on Saturday.
"A ship such as MV Wisdom would require a 10,000 horsepower tug or anchor handling vessel, to get it back on course and if neglected, it is capable of causing some serious damage to the structure of the Worli sea link bridge" said Sir Mehernosh Shroff, owner of Seaworthy Shipping, a company that specialises in oil spills and tug services.
Shroff also said that though officials claim that there was no fuel on board, the possibility of it having up to eight hundred liters of heavy fuel cannot be ruled out, which is capable of causing a sizeable ecological disaster.
"The vessel was last listed under a Singaporean flag before it apparently changed hands. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that it does not harm the Indian territorial waters," he said.
