Hungry Eyez may sound more like a Mills 'n' Boon title, but don't judge this restaurant by its name.

Or for that matter, its appearance. The tiny restaurant on the rather poorly lit Jivlapda Road in Kandivali (E) is easy to miss. But if you like your Chinese and your pockets are far from deep, drop in.

The white walls with red, old gold wall hangings scream Chinese New Year, and with not more than six tables in the air-conditioned section it's ambience is not one of its the place's strengths.

Chicken Sui Mai

We reached the restaurant at 10 in the night, and the waiters immediately identified us as the hapless bunch that called for directions, twice.

Finally there, and unbelievably hungry, we began with Veg Button Mushroom and Tomato Soup (Rs 60).

Lightly flavoured and mildly tangy it was good enough to make us forget meat for a while. But not for long.

We dug into Chicken Sui Mai (Rs 105), or dumplings for those unfamiliar with the Chinese language, along with an obvious classic Veg Spring Roll (Rs 85).

The Spring Roll was thick and crunchy and the Sui Mai delish and soft. Both came in generous portions, such that we barely had room for the main course.

But we ignored our full stomachs and gave into gluttony by ordering for the Mixed Singapore Hakka Noodles (Rs 100) as well as Roast Lamb with Broccoli and Pepper Sauce (Rs 130).

And even as we discussed how tender the lamb was, our waiter, Pema, caught on that we were Bengali. "I'm from Darjeeling," he chipped in, enthusiastically.

Though it's hard to be objective about anything from one's home state, we quashed all feelings of West Bengal and orderedu00a0 Honey Flat Noodles (Rs 25) for dessert.

And yes, it reminded us a little of what passes off as Darsan and Ice cream (a similar delicacy made from flat noodles) at any of the restaurants in Kolkata's Chinatown or Tangra.
