Bellary police who investigated the case are now contemplating action against Lad for filing a false complaint.
Superintendent of police Seemanth Kumar Singh said Lad has been asked for an explanation.
Die, if you campaignLad had claimed that he had received a call on his mobile phone from a private number on March 30. The caller allegedly threatened him with dire consequences if he went ahead and canvassed for the candidate from Bellary constituency, N Y Hanumantappa.
"The caller, who spoke in Telugu, threatened me saying that I too would meet the same fate as Yelbenchi Virupanagouda, a Congress leader who was hacked to death recently. I have been receiving similar calls for the past six months from a particular cellphone and have noted down the number. This is a deliberate attempt to prevent me from working for my party," Lad had said.
Private number
Based on his complaint, Bellary police took up the investigations and zeroed in on the private number after verifying the call details. Further verification found that the private number was in his name. When the police asked Lad about this, Lad reportedly admitted that the Sim belonged to him, but he has lost it sometime back. However, Lad did not file any complaint in this regard, Singh said.
Unsuccessful
Lad had unsuccessfully contested the last elections to the assembly from Bellary city. He lost to the BJP candidate by a narrow margin. A few days after filing his nomination papers, his house was attacked and three of his cars set ablaze allegedly by a group claiming to be followers of B Sriramulu.
'False complaint'Reacting to this, tourism minister Janardhana Reddy said that Lad is resorting to cheap gimmicks to gain sympathy. A criminal case should be booked against him for filing a false complaint, he said.
