Make the Right moves: Tripura Kashyap and Brinda Jacob are conducting a workshop on dance therapy

When did you begin learning dance?

Tripura:
When I was seven years old! I have learnt classical dance, Chau and contemporary dance. I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of this magical journey. Gradually, I developed a liking towards contemporary dance, as there are no rules in this art form. As an artist I had complete freedom to express my emotions through this dance form.u00a0
Brinda: I started performing contemporary dance at the age of 19, and today I am a professional dancer and have never been happier.

What triggered the idea of combining dance with therapy?
Tripura:
My brother was born with disabilities. I observed that music had a soothing effect on him. The thought that music could heal people grabbed my attention. Since then I decided to explore the therapeutic value of dance. I studied dance therapy and contemporary dance at Hancock Center, USA and also completed my Masters in Psychology.
Brinda: When I started performing, I experienced immense joy and satisfaction. I was confident that dance could heal people. When I met Tripura, she briefed me about the scientific way of using dance and I immediately packed my bags and went to study dance therapy in the UK. I started The Studio for Movement Arts and Therapies, where performing artistes from various disciplines come together to share and create new movement experience.

How effective are these therapies are in India?
Tripura:
Although dance therapy is still at a budding stage in India, there is more need for this therapy here than in the US. We encourage participants to develop a personal movement language to achieve holistic growth and healthier functioning. It encourages people to inculcate a positive attitude and it brings about positive changes in feelings, cognition, behavior and physical functioning. Participants also gain a better understanding of their movement potential, conflicts and needs.
Brinda: The theme for these dance therapies revolves around transition. Hence after our dance session, we have a 45-minute verbal processing session.u00a0We also have workshops for corporate organisations that help in team building and stress relief.
