Ten days after MiD DAY's report on private websites putting up the wrong HSC timetable, five students have approached the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) stating they missed their German language paper owing to a mistake in the timetable.
MiD DAY in its report on February 22, 'Websites put up wrong HSC timetable,' had pointed out that the mistake of the private websites could mean disaster if students referred to those timetables.
The error occurred because of outdated information picked up by private websites without verification.
MSBSHSE had put up a tentative exam timetable a couple of months in advance to give students an idea of the schedule. When the final exam schedule was prepared, some modifications were done taking into account the holidays and convenience of students and exam centres, but websites picked up the outdated timetable.
On Monday, the students met Shahaji Dhekne, secretary of MSBSHSE, and explained their plight. "The students told us that they couldn't go to the college and check the timetable. They said they had referred to some private websites that gave links to the timetable uploaded by MSBSHSE. The timetable they referred to was tentative and many months old. We had revised it later. We had informed all colleges that some private websites have uploaded wrong timetable and the students ignored this warning too," he said, blaming the college professors for not informing the students about changed schedules.
Dhekne said the students have been asked to give a written application through their college for special relief. While the students have requested that they be allowed to write the exams at a later point of time, the board is in no mood to relent.
MSBSHSE chief Ujjwaladevi Patil said that there was no question of re-examination for the students.
"We cannot allow them to write their papers later as there is no provision for re-examination at all. In this case, it was the mistake of the students. There were many channels of information and if they chose to ignore the board and college and rely on private websites, we cannot help them. And they had many days on their hands to verify the timetable but they didn't bother to do it," said Patil.
