Terra Naomi took the Internet by storm one night when she recorded herself playing her song Say It's Possible, inspired by Al Gore's film 'An Inconvenient Truth', and uploaded it to YouTube. She posted a series of videos filmed in her Hollywood apartment, naming it her "Virtual Summer Tour". In March 2007, she received one of the inaugural YouTube Video Awards for the music video category. A chance meeting with Gore led to a solo performance at Wembley Stadium in London as part of the Live Earth concert in July 2007.
"Traditionally, an artist would have fans wherever the record label released their album and wherever radio was playing their album, but now with Internet, you have fans anywhere anyone can watch you," Terra told MiD DAY in an email interview. With over 15 million views of her homemade videos on YouTube, nearly 35,000 subscribers and an unparalleled interactive dialogue with fans of her fresh singing-songwriting, Terra is at the forefront of the new direct artist-to-fan model.
After a stint with major label Island Universal Records in 2008, Terra is now contract-free and embarking on a global solo tour that includes a two-week India tour. "This is my first time in India. I was asked by a fan, Raymond Thibodeaux, who is now a friend, if I would consider touring India. Of course, I said 'Yes' and Ray organised the entire tour," she says.
Terra has chosen to lend her support to a string of issues. Her gig at Brigade Road today afternoon will mark the first anniversary of last November's terror attacks. She is scheduled to visit a Himalayan glacier with an international press crew to highlight the region's fast-shrinking glaciers, followed by a "Say It's Possible" Climate Change Concert in Srinagar. The concert will include online music videos and appeals from Terra and others to support grass-roots environmental projects in ecologically-fragile Kashmir. The projects include restoring forests, recycling drives, and promoting an alternative fuels industry.
The soft-faced singer lives by her green ideals too. "I have made little changes in my routine," she says. She bought a ceramic travel coffee mug so she doesn't have to use paper cups every morning. "They add up when you drink as much coffee as I do!" She unplugs appliances when they are not in use, turns off lights and tries to use as little water as possible when brushing, showering and doing the dishes. "I try to be mindful of everything I use; every little change is a step in the right direction," is her belief.u00a0
