If you're in a mood to listen to some quirky tunes, then lend an ear to Old Jungle Saying, a city band which will give you a taste of original, experimental rock tonight
Are you ready to unwind after a hard day with thumping rhythm, innovative lyrics and experimental music? Well, if you are, then don't miss the Old Jungle Saying, a band performing live this evening. Blending psychedelic groovy funk with taut beats, they are ready to rock you. The band features Sandeep Madhavan on bass, Hemanth Diwakaran on guitar, Aditya Menon on vocals and Gijsbert Ackermans on drums.
How did the band come about?
It was the fall of 2005, and Melroy D'Mello and I (Sandeep Madhavan) were scouting for drummers to indulge our petulance, which happened to be a few self-indulgent songs up our belt. On the way, we met Aditya Menon serenading a beer at Legends of Rock on an open mic night, and we bought him over along with the drummer who recommended him to us.
And how did you come up with Old Jungle Saying?
We're all comic fans. And the line comes from the Phantom series which was the only cool one around when we were growing up. Our songs are quirky, dark and they don't always have happy endings.
Your music genre?
A mix of genres, sometimes resting in a comfortable space we call Spazz Jazz.
What can we look forward at the performance tonight?
We will be performing Originals, Covers, 80s TV themes, Death Metal and Acapella. Just kidding about the originals, covers and 80s TV themes. We've played intermittently in Bangalore. The live music ban put a dampener on our plans for world domination, so we've just played at a few shows after that.
Any original compositions
Yes. About eight or ten.
How is it like playing in this city?
It's great because the audience actually grooves to an original setlist. So the bands have to work hard on their songs, while presenting them to a live audience, instead of just putting some progressions together to prove that they can have originals too.
What's on your ipod?
Funk, Jazz Rock, Classic Rock, Drum n Bass, Grunge, Post Rock, Electronica, (this can take all day.)
Musicians that inspire you?
I've (Sandeep Madhavan) always been inspired by Les Claypool from Primus and Stanley Clarke. Adi trips on the Beatles, Stone Temple Pilots and Dave Matthews Band. Hemanth sounds like Mike McReady and John Frusciante in a blender. Gijsbert's into Neil Peart from Rush and bands like Radio Head, Thursday and the Drive In.
You guys do psychedelic. How does Bangalore take it?
If you present psychedelic within the context of a song it becomes relevant enough to have listeners. We just camouflage an inherent need to space out with funk grooves and thunder and we get along with everyone.

How are you different from other bands?
We aren't more special. We're just cooler.u00a0
