Cops say the scholar accused of murdering girl from Manipur used items to fan his sexual fantasies

It couldn't get murkier than this. Pushpam Sinha, the PhD scholar of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, arrested for murdering and trying to rape a teenaged girl from Manipur, was not a spurned lover acting on impulse. It seems he was a sex maniac who fanned his perversion with pornographic material that cops recovered from his house.

Cops from the Vasant Vihar police station, who arrested the 34-year-old bachelor accused of killing and burning his neighbour Ramchanphy Hongray, recovered pornographic CDs and DVDs along with women's clothes, which he claimed to have bought for his female friends. Sources in the police team that arrested him said they recovered lingerie and bangles, which they suspect Sinha used to indulge in his sexual fantasies.

"We recovered porn DVDs and magazines from his house. Apart from women's clothes and lingerie, he also had bangles. He did not stay with any woman. He told us he had bought these items as gifts for his friends but his claims are frivolous," said a senior police official investigating the case.u00a0

Cold-blooded and brutal

Hongray was found strangled to death and her body charred at her residence in Munirka, south Delhi, on Sunday. She lived with her sister who works with a restaurant at Connaught Place.

According to the cops, Sinha had been trying to woo the girl for a few weeks. Neighbours too suspected him. When arrested, Sinha broke down and confessed to his crime.

"The victim had come to stay with her sister Timila a month ago. The accused got attracted towards her and started fancying her. When he did not get any positive response from the girl he got agitated. On Sunday at around 4.30 pm, when the victim was alone in her kitchen, he entered the house and caught her hand. When the girl raised an alarm, he strangulated her to death. Then, to mislead cops and people, he burnt the girl's face and upper torso on the gas stove. After ensuring she had enough burn injuries to make it look like an accident, he fled the spot," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal.

The killer's mind

Sinha, a native of Bihar, could have been mistaken for another ambitious, young man who had come to Delhi to pursue higher studies.

His father had retired from Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd as deputy director and his doctor mother was practicing in a government hospital.

Sinha had done his BTech from Allahabad University and his MSc (Engineering) from IISC, Bangalore. Since July 2008, he had been studying at IIT, Delhi.
