If the boy doesn't share the sentiment, he might lead them on a wild goose chase.

He will come around eventually, and a happy marriage will ensue. Though this might seem to be an unbelievable method of settling down, this is how village belles from the Garo Hills in Meghalaya get hitched.

It also serves as the premise of documentary filmmaker Nandini Bedi's film, Notes on Man Capture, to be screened in the city.

This evening, Vikalp@Alliance will showcase two films revolving around the theme: The Other Side of Courtship.

Bedi's documentary will bring to light a little-known custom, a short film by Tanmay Agarwal, titled Chal Chaliye, will transport you back to a city romance.

In an e-mail interview with Bedi, who is currently residing in The Netherlands, she tells MiD DAY how she hopes to bring the people inu00a0 the film closer to the people who see it.

"We may follow different customs, but our lives are made of similar emotions sorrow, disappointment, desire and longing," she says. "This film is also a way to understand that gender roles are constructs.

At one place, the bride is expected to sit with her head bowed and avoid direct gaze, in another, the bridegroom does that. It's we who make the rules.

They're not in our genes." Her movie tracks the life of Ratmi, a single mom with a colourful past who wants to get married.

In a change of landscape, Agarwal's story seems more of a Bollywood drama, what with a u00a0u00a0boy approaching his childhood buddy for her hand, a fortnight before she is to marry another guy.

What might be of interest is that the filmmaker will be present at the screening and might speak about the six month-long battle with the Central Board of Film Certification over two "innocent" and "harmless" kisses in the film, that were meant to be edited, initially.
