Second Shift seems a strange name for a Blues-Rock band but is apt for the group of musicians who do the balancing act between their careers and their musical dreams. At least, that's how band member Sandy Mittal described it. "Work is our first shift. But the name is also about an alternative way of looking at life." The band consists of working professionals and was formed in early 2009. The members have spent the last year putting together their self-titled CD compilation of 10 songs and playing at live venues across Mumbai.

The band members include Vinod Easwaran (vocals), Sandy Mittal (guitar), Mohit James (bass), Ashley Murray (drums), Prashant Sumanth (percussion/ drums) and SRC (guitar). Their day jobs are as bankers, consultants and senior HR executives while music is their driving passion. "It makes our long working hours worthwhile. We rehearse during weekends and late at nights," adds Sandy.
Second Shift focuses on playing songs that tell a story. "We write stories that are set to music; stories about control and loss of it, about growing up, love, arch villains stuck in madhouses and even stories on the search for more stories," comments Mittal. They are however a bit ambivalent about their genre of music. "We haven't quite defined what genre we fit into as we come from Blues-Rock-Alternative Roots background and are influenced by bands such as REM, Morphine and Blues Brothers." Mittal is all praise for the Pune janata as unlike Mumbai or Bangalore, where are set on Heavy Metal sounds, Punekaris are more open to new sounds.
