The latest directive by the transport department in Mumbai asks the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to keep family of accident victims informed and also update motorists of traffic situation in the city. The directive will soon be implemented statewide.

The directive asks offices to make use of mobile numbers, e-mail IDs and other contact details provided by vehicle owners at time of registration to get in touch with them during emergency situations.

While the primary task of recording accident details lies with the traffic police, the RTO too will assist in contacting the kin of accident victims.

The traffic police often liaisons with the RTO to trace the addresses and contact details of accident victims. At such times, the RTO will contact the families of victims, and inform them of the tragedy.

Authorities are also planning to explore ways to inform motorists of traffic situation during major accidents and disasters via e-mails and SMS alerts.

"We also plan to introduce a system wherein motorists will be informed when their registration fee is due and other important vehicle taxes using their contact details.

People won't have to visit the RTO office every time to know when payment is due," said an official requesting anonymity.
