What do you look for when you are buying something? People use words like 'quality' and 'economy' to define what gadgets they want.u00a0
What do these words mean? Quality, especially, because it lies in the eye of the beholder. When a film stunt master and the builder of a high rise apartment ask for a 'high quality window pane', then the former wants something that will not hurt the stuntman when he drives a bike through it, while the latter wants something that will not shatter when a burglar tries to break it down.u00a0
Again, economy depends on a variety of factors. A top executive may think nothing of picking a 10 MP camera for, say, Rs 25,000, while his junior might go in for an 8 MP camera for Rs 15,000.u00a0
Given these constraints, it is terribly difficult to pick up products that match everybody's expectations. Still, we have tried, and we hope that you like our choice!u00a0

A word of caution Today, many stores sell electronic medical equipment along with gadgets and while it is cool to be able to check your blood sugar without having to leave your house, you must remember that medical equipment should only be used under a doctor's supervision.u00a0u00a0
I learnt this lesson when he tried out the BP monitor. When the systolic reading measured over 140, I was worried that I had high BP only when I went home and looked at a book on medicine did I realise that, while the systole/diastole is normally supposed to be 120/70, the top figure can go as high as 140 and still be normal. It is dangerous to have a BP like, say, 180/90, and even then, only a doctor can tell you if it is bad for you, depending on your lifestyle. A machine can't do that, so use such equipment under a doctor's supervision.u00a0
But this is not to say that one should not use any medical home monitoring equipment. Wikipedia says that some people register higher BP in a hospital because of 'white coat hypertension', which is caused by anxiety related to an examination by a health care professional. Such people may benefit by doing their own reading at home because they are in control and can use the machine when they are in a calm state. Still, the patient should ideally only write down the reading and allow his doctor to come up with the diagnosis and treatment.u00a0u00a0
