Calls the victim's phone, and tells him that they are about to rescue him; panicked kidnappers flee the spot A phone call from a police officer saved a 21-year-old who was kidnapped by a group of three for a ransom of Rs 50,000 on Tuesday.
Kevin Deepak Pinto, who works for a travel company in Koramangala was approached by three youth, enquiring him about his motorcycle, which was for sale. One was Rahman, a friend of Pinto from his college, so Pinto readily agreed to show his bike. The trio took Pinto to RT Nagar on the pretext of buying his bike, and from there later took him to a house in Sultanpalya.
Soon Pinto realised that he was being kidnapped, as they started demanding valuables from him, and confiscated his mobile phone. Back at his workplace, his colleagues noticed that he was missing, and sensing something fishy, informed the police. They also told the police that Pinto's mobile was coming unanswered ever since he left with the three boys.
Back in Sultanpalya, the kidnappers had taken Pinto's wallet, and tried to withdraw money from the ATM using his debit card. But luckily, there was no money in the ATM. They then made a ransom demand of Rs 50,000.
The Koramangala police swung into action and repeatedly tried to contact Pinto's mobile phone. After a few hours, one of the kidnappers accidentally picked up the mobile phone, but gave it to Pinto to receive the call.
Inspector Nagraj K asked the name to confirm whether he is Pinto and asked him where he was. Nagraj also told Pinto that he knew that he had been kidnapped, and he need not fear, as his men had identified the location and were about to reach the spot.
The kidnappers who were listening to the conversation asked Pinto who he was speaking to, to which Nagraj replied that he was an inspector from the Koramangala police station, and gave a landline number to confirm.
The kidnappers immediately called back the number, and confirmed that it was indeed from the police station.
Fearing that they would be nabbed soon, the kidnappers decided to release him, brought Pinto to RT Nagar main road, and after warning him not to reveal their identities, and sped away.
"After calling Pinto, we were sure that he had been kidnapped. But we didn't have time and any other information about his whereabouts, so I tried to create fear psychosis among the kidnappers which worked out," Nagraj said, adding that he was relieved when Pinto returned safe.
"We have taken up a case of kidnapping and efforts are on to nab the trio. We will know the motive only after we arrest them," Nagraj said.
