Dance artists from Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company perform Faultline

What happens when you take a classically trained Bharatanatyam dancer who has lived across the world, and choreograph "life at the moment"? You get Choreo-geography. Get a glimpse of the dance form at London-based Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company's twin shows tonight at the National Centre for the Performing Arts.

"Choreo-geography is about how location influences dance and culture. We are performing a double bill. The first piece is called Faultline, inspired by Gautam Malkhani's book Londonstani, where the characters are disaffected Asian youth," says the company's artistic director Jeyasingh.

Faultline is a response to the unease Jeyasingh felt after the July 7, 2005 London tube bombings. At the performance you will see monochrome films, specially commissioned to filmmaker Pete Gomes, with Goan soprano Patricia Rosario, singing live.

The second piece, Bruise Blood starts with Come Out, American composer Steve Reich's seminal piece inspired by the Harlem riots of the 60s. The next part is remixed by two other composers, including beatboxer Shlomo Kahn.

"It is a three-part dance with three wholly different and distinct pieces of music. I've tried to depict the anxiety that young people today are accustomed to, and the various choices they are offered by the world," says 53 year-old Jeyasingh, who won the Asian Woman of Achievement award in 2008 for her contribution to Britain's cultural life.u00a0

On Monday, Chennai-born Jeyasingh will conduct a lecture on Choreo-geography and her ideology of dance. "Inspiration for dance is everywhereu00a0-- in ballet, martial art and flamingo, even in the way people walk," she says.
