This is one birthday gift megastar Amitabh Bachchan will never forget. As he celebrated his 70th birthday here Thursday, a long-oppressed bullock was named in honour of characters the Big B portrayed.

The bullock has been named Vijay in honour of Bachchan by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and Animal Rahat, Sangli, an official said here.

"Bachchan, who has been a vegetarian for a long time, has portrayed characters named Vijay in some 20 movies. He has also been PETA's Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity for three years in a row," a PETA official said.

PETA India chief Poorva Joshipura, describing Bachchan and bullock Vijay as "very handsome fellows", said Bachchan saves animals' lives by not eating them while Vijay was granted a new lease of life after he was rescued a few years ago by Animal Rahat.

Vijay is now leading a peaceful, healthy and retired life at Animal Rahat's farm in Sangli. For company, he has horses, donkeys and other cattle rescued from sugar mills, brick kilns and other places.

Animal Rahat, a non-profit NGO, offers free aid and a home to animals who have outlived their utility to their owners, who often also cannot afford medical treatment for them.
