The quest for speed and more speed...

When most people of his age hang their boots in the pursuit of comfortable activities, Dilip Majarekar was driving through forests, the unpredictable dunes of the Thar as well as the slippery beach-front along the Arabian Sea.

Thrilling: Dilip Majarekar

Dilip Majarekar, 55, a passionate biker, drove from Mumbai to Delhi to participate in the six-day Desert Storm rally. He dominated the desert on his KTM 640 cc superbike.

"I covered more than 5,600 kilometres in just seven days. Though my passion for speed drills hole in the pocket, but I will continue racing in such rallies. I want to do it on every terrain," Majarekar said.

Majarekar, who hails from Mumbai, is a record holder for his extraordinary driving in Limca Book of Records. He recalled,u00a0 "On my 350 cc Yamaha I drove more than 4,600 kilometres in five days at the Great Desert Himalaya in 1982.u00a0 Great Desert Himalaya is one of the harshest regions of the world with sub-zero temperatures, icy winds, landslides and ice falls."

To put the best machine through the grind in a test of endurance, Majarekar did not hesitate to shell out Rs 7 lakh for the KTM bike, which runs fast on dirt track.u00a0 A visibly excited Manjarekar said, "Apart from a whopping investment in the bike, I spent Rs 3 lakh on engine modification."

For the 55-year-old adventure junkie the rally was not easy this time.

"I almost went handicapped in the first round in Bikaner as my Global Positioning System (GPS) was not working. I had to take out the road map to judge directions. Moreover, I was carrying lot of luggage as I was coming directly from Mumbai."
