The cops couldn't even take down the registration number because none of them had a notebook on them.In a major embarrassment for cops, a biker gave over 20 policemen the slip in presence of a dozen onlookers even before a cop made an attempt to book him.
Crash! The spot where the boy's two-wheeler rammed into a MUV coming
in from M G Road on to Museum Road. Pic/Manjunath Lu00a0 HanjiThe cops, who incidentally were conducting a drink-driving check on Thursday night at the Church Street-Museum Road junction, didn't even have a notebook to record the bike's registration number. The red-faced police team has been looking for this biker since the past three days. This incident took place in presence of this reporter.
The boy, who police believe had consumed more alcohol than the permissible limit was going towards Church Street on a two-wheeler and rammed into a MUV coming in from M G Road on to Museum Road. A night beat inspector who was stationed there, rushed to the spot. They biker had sustained minor injuries.
A check of both drivers confirmed that the rider was drunk while the jeep driver was not. But despite his condition, the boy acted normal, never letting the cops think what could be in store for them.
The inspector suggested that the car driver bear the cost of repairing the bike along with medical expenses. When the boy heard the inspector's suggestion, he started asking for money right then and there.
However the cop asked the boy to call his parents and go to the hospital. But the rider started pestering the driver for money. The cop however refused to give in, and said that the money would be paid in the morning, and that the rider should head to hospital right then.
This went on for 30 minutes; with over 20 policemen including traffic police and onlookers arriving at the spot after they heard about the incident.
In the meanwhile, after the boy refused to call his parents or go to hospital, the cop asked for his driving licence. The boy realised that now the cops will book a case, so he stood next to his bike as if looking for his documents. Then he started the bike nonchalantly, and started towards MG Road.
The great escapeThe gathered crowd and the cops thought that he was merely looking to park the bike on the footpath. By the time they realised that he was simply riding off, it was too late. The rider was gone.
The irked night beat sub-inspector asked his juniors for the bike's registration number. To his surprise, none of the cops had bothered to take his number down because none of them had a notebook.
Constable R Kabbur, who tried chasing him told this reporter, "I never thought he would flee. We only wanted to file a simple drink and drive case but now we will take strict action against him. We have been on a lookout for him since Thursday."
R Ashok, the night in-charge inspector said, "The boy was scared of us. He just wanted to take money from the car driver and leave. But when the cops asked him to show a driving licence, he tricked us and escaped. The worst part is that no one bothered to take his number down."
