Scientific officer L Mahalingam's unnatural death was the second such case in as many months at the Kaiga nuclear plant. The first was the murder of technician Ravi Kumar Muleu00a0 (32). Police are clueless in both cases.
Mule was found dead on April 7 in the parking lot of an eight-storeyed building, nearly 300 to 400 metres away from the employees' quarters where he lived.

Tragic loss: Ravi Mule and his family

His bike was parked 15 metres away.

Mule was with the Kaiga plant for11 years and had been married for five. He had a four-year-old daughter and his wife was expecting their second child when he died.

Uttara Kannada police has as good as closed the case. Deputy superintendent of police Babu Kolekar, who is also investigating the Mahalingam case, ruled out a connection between the two cases.

"Since Mule's murder happened in broad daylight, somebody would have witnessed the crime. We have requested people for information but nobody is coming forward," he said.

But Mule's family refuses to take no for an answer and has posted stickers in the Kaiga campus, appealing to people to help them nab the killers.

Family version

Mule's brother Gyaneshwar, who was running a computer institute in Dandeli when the incident occurred, said, "On that fateful day, he was to move house. A day before, he cleaned up the new house and on April 7, he left at 7.30 in the morning, went to the canteen and had a cup of tea. Around 8.30 am, we heard that he was no more."

"Sniffer dogs went up to the second floor and then returned. We found scratches on his back and leg. The post-mortem report said death occurred due to a hard object hitting him on the chest," said Gyaneshwar, who now lives in Hubli.

After Mahalingam's death, Mule's family is wondering whether there's something amiss at the plant. They have written to the police and home minister to find the culprits.
