AN undertrial at the Yerawada Central Prison attempted suicide in the jail bathroom, reportedly because he was disturbed that his family had turned its back on him.
Identified as Babasaheb Raosaheb Bhosale (30), the undertrial tried to hang himself using the drawstring of his pyjama in the wee hours on Saturday.
The incident came to light when Maanik Jaiyram Bhavar (47), a security guard, was informed by Pandurang Dagdu Raut (68) that he had heard a loud thud in the bathroom.
When Bhavar and Raut entered the bathroom, they saw Bhosale on the floor as the pyjama drawstring had broken when he tried to hang himself from a fixed ceiling rod.
The incident took place at Barrack No. 2 under Circle 1. Jail authorities admitted Bhosale to the prison hospital and informed the Yerawada police station.
Bhavar registered a case of attempted suicide at the police station.
The police recorded Bhosale's statement at the hospital after doctors declared him fit to talk.
In his statement, Bhosale said he was fed up with his life as his wife was dead and his relatives had stopped visiting him in jail because they felt the family's reputation had been tarnished.
Deputy Jail Superintendent Sudhir Kingare said, "Bhosale was under trial for subjecting his wife to cruelty and making dowry demands, and her murder last year. He was in judicial custody the past two months."
Another jail officer, who requested anonymity, said, "We have lodged a complaint so that he does not try to do anything like this again. He will undergo treatment at the jail hospital for now."
