The four-storey factory of a German shoe company in Gurgaon, which caught fire on Monday evening, is still burning even as the building has collapsed.


Fire and police officials told MiD DAY that four fire tenders were fighting the blaze till late Tuesday evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Gurgaon south) Inder Singh Saini said, "The fire broke out around six on Monday evening, when the shift was over and most of the employees were leaving the factory. There are no casualties. However, the company officials have reported one of their employees missing."u00a0

"We are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire," he added.

The eyewitnesses cited that when the fire broke out in the building, people could be seen crying for help. Few even struggled to come down with the help of rope, but couldn't succeed as the rope caught fire too, and they fell down.u00a0

"About 25 fire tenders were sent to douse the blaze. The local people alleged that four to five people were trapped inside though no bodies have been recovered so far. The manager of the factory is absconding," said Ishm Singh Kashyap, chief fire officer, district fire station, Gurgaon.

Shreya Khetarpal, spokesperson of Adidas, said,u00a0 "All requisite safety norms were in place. We are providing all possible assistance in the investigation. No casualty has been reported so far but we have informed the police regarding one employee, who is missing."
