Discipline, devotion can coexist during Ganpati festival

As Mumbai gets ready to welcome Ganpati Bappa, mandals are already up and attracting devotees who are hanging around outside in a bid to get a sneak peek of the idol. While there is a mandate not to have idols taller than 4 feet, mandal organisers are still in discussions whether to allow a small number of devotees at the pandal.

Overall, there has been a stress on online darshan. Yet, in an extensive report in this paper, mandal organisers were quoted as saying that though there will be an emphasis on online darshan, they will be unable to turn away devotees if they visit the pandal.

They claimed crowd management is the job of the police. Some said they may allow a "few" devotees to come in and take blessings. Some said they were looking into having a system to regulate the number of people allowed inside.

With this grey area and fluid situation, one should be wary of things spiralling out of control. One set of devotees may insist on entering the pandal, citing examples of some other mandals allowing devotees. They may defy the police or try to strongarm their way into these pandals. As devotees, one can understand the fervour and longing to take blessings from the Lord.

Ganpati Bappa rightly evokes love and devotion and people are disappointed that they are unable to take blessings in person. Yet, they must also think orderliness is next to godliness in these times. A disciplined approach, some restraint and mutual understanding will make this festival more joyous.

Let us aim to shatter the fear that cases will be higher in festive season and surprise all by turning it on its head. This can be done by adhering to norms and regulations of both security personnel and volunteers. Wishing everyone a very happy Ganesh festival, just two days away now.
