It is dial W for women and dial S for safety as police stations were told to follow instructions about women's safety to the letter. An 11-point order has come from the police commissioner after a woman was brutally attacked with a rod and raped in Sakinaka. She died of her injuries a few days ago.

Some of these instructions are that all calls related to women's safety will have to be immediately acknowledged by the Control Room, which will set into motion a chain of events.

The Control Room will relay the information to units who are then supposed to swing into action. There is also an instruction to make a list of people who have been accused of crimes against women.

Other measures like increased patrolling, especially in dark places with dim lighting, has been ordered. Parked vehicles with no apparent owner for months, need to be reported and removed. Good CCTV surveillance in certain dimly lit areas is a must.

We hope our local leaders take charge of these measures instead of inane blame games and childish one-upmanship about safety of women.

If they can really use their political power and will to aid agencies to ensure these instructions are carried out, it will be time well spent.

We must also see adequate lighting at all civic infra spaces. Surveillance is a help and is reactive, where it can aid police in nabbing criminals. What can stop or prevent crime happening in the first place is good, bright lighting which will be a deterrent in several cases.

We need to now come together as a society, as communities to press the button on safety. Cracking the whip is a good move by the commissioner. Now, implementation is all important.
