A Matunga outfit working in the mental health space, conducted an on-ground activity which was reported in this paper.

Volunteers fanned out to different parts of the city where they engaged the public in interactive games which broke a few myths about mental health. They also cleared doubts about different concepts, definition of experts, blew away commonly held beliefs, and stressed on importance of sound mind, sound body. This was all done through an interesting presentation.

These events are more inclusive as people across the social spectrum could talk to the professionals. It broke the stereotype that only the rich may need mental health resources. In not so privileged homes, too, problems abound and mental health is not a niche issue, but one that resonates and concerns us all.

It is futile talking and making all the correct noises about mental health, if we do not see real change on the ground. Such outreach programmes actually bring mental health and even an initial showing out of clinics and classrooms and into the lives of people.

It is so important to factor in the mind and its health, and for that to happen we must begin with the right beliefs and knowledge. The professionals make it a little easier, they give people the courage to come out and say that they wish to learn about mental health.

Let us give more power to pathbreakers, whether it is a movie that dares to touch certain topics, to humbler but equally important events. More power to the trailblazers who are playing a part in changing the mindset mired in myths and misconceptions.
