Must teach kids respect for public property

Colaba-Cuffe Parade locals along with their local representatives got together to revamp a civic garden recently. The garden, near Budhwar Park, was frequented by children from the adjacent slums and other economically underprivileged sections.

The facelift, driven by the corporators, consisted of revamping the flooring which was dangerous and uneven. The new surface also acts as a cushion as it ensures a softer landing for kids who may fall as they play. The equipment was spruced up and appealing wall art were other facets of the makeover, highlighted in a report in this paper.

While talking about the project, a corporator claimed that wear 'n' tear of equipment is very quick in civic parks. This is because of the many children who use the facility, compared to private spaces like gardens in high-rise buildings used by fewer people. The corporator stated that it is entirely possible that the space will need a revamp in two years but that would be well worth the money and effort.

One cannot argue with that, given the immense benefits of outdoor activity. It is for us though to inculcate good civic sense in children, beginning from an early age. Whatever their socio-economic strata, they must be taught that vandalism of public property, which also applies to equipment in parks is a crime. Even defacing in what they may think is a small or flippant way by scratching them or breaking little parts is a criminal act.

By doing so, treating infra either indifferently or with great callousness, they are also harming themselves as the amenity will be of no use to them in the long run. Besides, if they learn respect for play equipment at a young age, they will respect all infrastructure and facilities as adults.

Let us teach them correct usage, decorum and respect, which will automatically translate into responsibility as adults.
