After 700 hours of sitting and staring at members of the public in the Museum of Modern Art, Serbian artist Marina Abramovic has concluded the longest piece of performance art on record.

Since her retrospective opened in New York on March 14, the artist sat for seven hours a day, six days a week, on a chair in the museum''s atrium, reports the Telegraph.

In her performance piece 'The Artist Is Present,' visitors were invited to sit in a chair facing her and simply return her silent gaze.

The 1,400 people who came and sat opposite the artist, who always dressed in a long cassock, also included celebrities like Bjork, Lou Reed, Marisa Tomei and Isabella Rossellini.u00a0
