A magnitude 8.3 earthquake hit off the coast of Chile shaking buildings in the capital city of Santiago and generating a tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and French Polynesia.

Residents sifted through rubble in central Chile and saved what they could from homes after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake killed 11 people, forced one million from their homes and sent giant waves crashing into coastal areas.
