Having revealed his homosexuality, England cricketer Steven Davies can play more freely, says psychologist Sandy Gordon

England's Steven Davies, the first professional cricketer, who has admitted to being gay, would be able to play more freely from now on, according to famous Australian sports psychologist Sandy Gordon.

"Davies may not be a part of the present World Cup squad, but when he is selected to play for his country, he will be able to play more freely," Gordon said from Perth.

Davies, a 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman from Worcestershire, had played in eight ODIs but was omitted after the one-day series Down Under.

Although he went public about his homosexuality only on Monday, Davies had disclosed it to his family and teammates earlier.

"The possible reason for his admission was because sharing that aspect of himself with others is important to his mental health. Life can be unfairly difficult when you feel as though you have to hide an important part of yourself," said Gordon who had worked with the Indian and Sri Lankan teams briefly a few years ago.

Relief
"Had I been his mentor, I would have advised him exactly what he heard from those he sought counsel from. I would imagine enormous relief and validation as a human being who deserves respect (for Davies).u00a0 "Hopefully he will thrive and flourish both as a person and as a cricketer."
