India won the toss and chose to ball first. The Rohit Sharma-led side opted for a four-pronged pace attack, and chose Ravindra Jadeja over seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Usman Khawaja and David Warner opened for Australia. Mohammed Shami bowled the first over.

Mohammed Siraj took the first wicket in the fourth over, dismissing Usman Khawaja for a duck whereas Shardul Thakur took the second wicket, dismissing David Warner for 43 in the 22nd over. The third wicket came in the 25th over with Mohammed Shami dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for 26.

Travis Head walked in with Australia struggling at 76/3. He smashed a century and built an impressive partnership with Steve Smith. Head and Smith were batting at 146* and 95* respectively as Australia scored a massive 327/3 at the end of the opening day.
